NORTH SHORE
- Postcards Cafe- We didn’t get a chance to eat here, but it looks like the fanciest option for vegan dining. This restaurant is pescatarian and a bit pricey. http://www.postcardscafe.com/menu/
- Federico’s- This is an ‘authentic’ Mexican food walk up with seating. They have a vegan menu right on their board. They share oil with meat & dairy, so if you care just ask them to skip the fryer! I got the enchiladas and Davis got the veggie burrito, we were both satisfied with our lunch choices! http://federicoskauai.com/hanalei-menu/
- Kilauea Bakery & Pizza- We didn’t stop here, but it was on my list because you can’t go wrong with pizza especially a place that carries vegan Mozzarella! http://www.kilaueabakery.com
- Kauai Juice Co.- This place had a list of great cold pressed juice options & we got their Hawaiin hot sauce to take home. They also carry fermented food items to snack on. They are not a vegan company and some items contain dairy & honey. https://www.kauaijuiceco.com/pages/daily-menu
- Fruit stands- They are all along the roads in Kauai. Papaya, sugar cane, mango, bananas, pineapple, dragon fruit.
EAST SHORE
- Verde- This was our favorite restaurant, we ended up eating here almost every day! They have vegan tacos on the menu and even had a vegan special- crumble tacos made from taro while we were there. You can add a side of refried beans and rice for a few dollars that were to die for. They have Margarita Monday’s for $5. http://www.verdehawaii.com/ewExternalFiles/Verde%20Menu%20ALL-4.pdf
- Papayas Natural Foods– This was another one of our repeat food spots! It was like a Whole Foods grocery store, but in the back there is a small café. They have a full menu that is mostly vegan including taro burgers, Rueben sandwiches, smoothies, tacos and a hot bar with lots of vegan options including potato salad and cheeze biscuits. Lots of gluten-free options as well. http://places.singleplatform.com/papayas-natural-foods-and-cafe-2/menu?ref=integration
- Aloha ‘aina Kuai- Smoothies and bowls. This was our favorite breakfast spot. We ordered the Chunky Monkey (to make vegan: substitute chocolate chips for cacao nibs, gluten-free granola, & no honey)
- Java Kai Best coffee I had on the island! They have some vegan items on their food menu, but they aren’t clearly labeled, so just ask. https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0150/0792/files/1JK_MENU_2018_SPRING.pdf?11294045634605882056
- Kauai Juice Co.- They have another location in Kapaa! https://www.kauaijuiceco.com/pages/daily-menu
POIPU
We were able to find all of the following vegan options all in the Poipu Shopping center close to where we were staying.http://poipushoppingvillage.com
- Island Taco- There are 3 tofu taco options with homemade tortillas. This was my favorite option in the shopping center. Rice and beans are vegan as well. Staff is knowledgeable of vegan items.
- Pelani Gelato- half of their options are dairy free with no eggs, so there were plenty of flavors to choose from!
- Puka Dog- We didn’t end up trying it, because it’s pricey for a little amount of food, but they offer a veggie dog that looks amazing. They offer Hawaiian fruit relish: mango, pineapple, papaya, coconut, banana, or star fruit. Their secret sauce is not vegan & I would double check about the bun.
- Kauai Juice Co.- Another one!
- Starbucks- I try to avoid going to chains while on vacation, but when I’m in a crunch this is one of those safe places to get a quit snack. Most locations have a plain bagel, seven grain bagel, oatmeal (can request extra coconut milk instead of water), and fruit bars. I will often go to Starbucks during layovers, and ask for a free water with my drink which is nice when airport water can be like $5+.
- Bangkok Happy Bowl- I do not recommend going here. The wait for food is very long, the wait staff was rude, the food was bland. I ordered pad Thai with tofu with medium heat and it had no flavor and didn’t include any veggies.
